What Is SmarTrack?

SmarTrack is a British vehicle tracking brand, launched in 2005 and monitored by Global Telemetrics from their own control centre in Coalville, Leicestershire. That last part matters more than most people realise: when your vehicle is taken, the person who picks up the phone is sitting in England, not reading from a script on another continent.

Global Telemetrics have recovered over £227 million worth of stolen vehicles, run a 24/7/365 secure control centre staffed by SIA-licenced operators, and — unusually — keep a dedicated repatriation team whose job is getting your vehicle physically back to you once it’s found. Plenty of companies will tell you where your car is. Fewer will bring it home.

The other thing that sets SmarTrack apart is breadth. Most brands cover cars and vans. SmarTrack have Thatcham-approved units for plant, agricultural machinery, marine, caravans, trailers and motorcycles as well — so if you’ve got a mixed yard of things worth stealing, one brand and one app covers the lot.

The SmarTrack Range We Fit

SmarTrack name their S5 systems with a plus sign rather than the word — so a SmarTrack 5+ is their S5 Plus. If you’re not sure which category your policy wants, call us and read us the wording; we’ll tell you straight away.

SmarTrack 5 with D-iD — Thatcham S5

The standard S5 system, supplied with two D-iD driver recognition cards. These are credit-card sized and rechargeable rather than the usual keyfob tag — they slip in a wallet, which in practice means people actually carry them. The system checks the card is present while you drive, and alerts the control centre the moment the vehicle moves without one.

SmarTrack 5+ — Thatcham S5 with remote immobilisation (SmarTrack’s S5 Plus)

Everything the 5 does, plus the control centre can immobilise the vehicle remotely at police request while a theft is in progress. So instead of watching a dot move up the M11, the engine can be stopped and the car recovered where it sits.

SmarTrack 5+ iMOB — Thatcham S5 with no-tag-no-start

The strongest of the three. The vehicle immobilises itself automatically every time the ignition goes off and won’t start again without an authorised card present — no tag, no start. This is the one we recommend against relay and keyless theft, because it doesn’t rely on anyone noticing anything: the car simply won’t go.

SmarTrack Trident — Thatcham S7

The full-featured S7 with app and online account, and optional remote immobilisation. A sensible choice where your policy asks for insurance-approved tracking but hasn’t specified S5.

SmarTrack Protector Pro — Thatcham S7

Detects movement without the ignition being on — which is exactly how a vehicle gets winched onto a low loader and driven away in daylight. If your worry is the car being lifted rather than driven, this is the one to look at.

SmarTrack Reco and Protector — Thatcham S7

The entry point into insurance-approved tracking. Reco covers the standard requirement at the lowest cost; Protector is battery-powered and wireless with tamper alerts, so it goes where there’s no permanent power to wire into.

MotoTrak, Maxi, Caravan and Trailer — Thatcham S7

SmarTrack FAQs

Is SmarTrack Thatcham approved?

Yes — the SmarTrack range covers both Thatcham Category S5 and Category S7. Worth knowing that Thatcham certification and insurer acceptance aren’t quite the same thing, so always tell your insurer exactly which category has been fitted.

What’s the difference between SmarTrack 5, 5+ and 5+ iMOB?

All three are Thatcham S5 with driver recognition cards. The 5 tracks and alerts. The 5+ adds remote immobilisation, so the control centre can stop the engine at police request during a theft. The 5+ iMOB goes further again — the vehicle immobilises itself every time you switch off and won’t restart without a card present.

Can I take SmarTrack with me when I change vehicle?

Yes — SmarTrack systems are transferable between vehicles, which not every brand allows. There’s a charge for the removal and refitting work, but the subscription itself moves with you. Ask us when you’re changing cars and we’ll sort it.

Does SmarTrack work in Europe?

Yes — European coverage is included as standard, so you’re covered taking the vehicle abroad.

Do I have to pay a subscription?

Yes. The subscription pays for the 24/7 UK control centre, the police liaison and the SIM in the unit — without it you’ve got a box in the car and nobody watching it, and you lose your insurance compliance. SmarTrack offer annual, multi-year and duration-of-ownership options. Call us for current pricing on the system you need.
