Thatcham Category 2 & 2E
Category 2
The standard insurance-approved electronic immobiliser, isolating two or more circuits — ignition, fuel pump or starter — to stop the engine starting without the correct key. Most vehicles built since 1998 have one fitted as standard; older, imported or classic vehicles often need one added.
Category 2E
A newly introduced Thatcham standard that adds a further approved immobilisation layer alongside your vehicle’s existing factory Category 2 system, rather than replacing it. As a new standard, some insurers’ approved-device lists may take time to catch up — we’re happy to talk through what that means for your policy.
