We fit both of these immobilisers, so this isn’t a sales pitch for the only thing on the shelf — it’s the comparison we walk customers through on the phone every week. The Nitro immobiliser and the Scorpion X have a lot in common: both are CAN-bus immobilisers, both stop relay attacks, key cloning and CAN injection dead, both are fully hidden in the vehicle, and both cost £499 supplied and fitted. But put them side by side and one of them pulls clearly ahead. Here’s why the Nitro Pro is our winner.

What They Share

Start with the common ground, because it matters. Both systems sit invisibly on your vehicle’s CAN network — no cut wires, no extra keypad, nothing for a thief to find. Both immobilise the engine so it simply will not start without the correct disarm, even with your real key, a cloned key or a relayed signal. Both can be disarmed with a PIN sequence entered on the car’s own buttons, both are popular choices on Toyota and Lexus — the most targeted makes on the road — and both are fitted at your home or workplace with service and valet modes demonstrated before we leave.

Where the Nitro Pro Pulls Ahead

TASSA approval. This is the big one. The Nitro Pro is a TASSA-approved system, and that matters when your insurer gets involved — more and more insurers now ask for a TASSA-verified immobiliser before they’ll cover high-risk vehicles, and Toyota’s own insurance arm specifically asks for TASSA-verified devices. Fit a Nitro Pro and you have recognised accreditation and certification to hand your insurer on the day. The Scorpion X does the same job of stopping the theft, but it doesn’t carry that badge.

Bluetooth convenience. The Scorpion X is PIN-only: every time you drive, you enter your sequence on the car’s buttons. Fine for some drivers — but the Nitro Pro gives you a choice. Carry the paired Bluetooth tag, or just your phone, and the system disarms automatically as you get in. No sequence to enter on the school run, no fumbling in the rain — and your PIN is still there as a backup if the tag stays at home. Two ways to disarm will always beat one.

Purpose-built for the most stolen makes. The Nitro Pro is engineered specifically around Toyota and Lexus — the Hilux, RAV4, Land Cruiser, C-HR and Lexus RX and NX are the most targeted vehicles in the region, and it’s the system we fitted to the new Mercedes CLA petrol hybrid in a UK first. The Scorpion X is popular on the same vehicles, but the Nitro Pro is the specialist. It works far wider than Toyota and Lexus too — see our write-up on the best vehicle security for the Mk8.5 Volkswagen Golf.

When the Scorpion X Still Makes Sense

Honesty matters here: the Scorpion X is a good immobiliser, and we’re happy to fit it. If you actively prefer a pure PIN system — nothing paired, nothing carried, no Bluetooth anywhere near your car — the Scorpion X does exactly that, simply and reliably, for the same £499. For some drivers that simplicity is the whole point.

The Verdict

At the same fitted price, the Nitro Pro gives you everything the Scorpion X does plus TASSA approval your insurer recognises and Bluetooth hands-free disarming with a PIN backup. Same money, more protection on paper and more convenience in daily use — that makes the Nitro Pro the clear winner for most drivers, and it’s the system we recommend first on Toyota and Lexus. Want to double up? Pair either immobiliser with a Thatcham-approved tracker: see our Immobiliser & S7 Tracker Package (£649) and Immobiliser & S5 Tracker Package (£749).
