Autowatch Ghost 3: What CAN FD Changed, and Which Ghost Your Car Now Takes

If you have been looking at a Ghost immobiliser and keep running into different names — Ghost 3, Ghost-III, Ghost 3 FD, Ghost Pro FD — you are not going mad. Autowatch has moved the range on, and the naming has not entirely caught up with itself.

Here is the plain version, from a TASSA-approved installer (Member No. 0009) who fits these week in, week out across Essex, Hertfordshire and North London.

The short answer

The Ghost 3 is the current generation of the Autowatch Ghost. It does the same fundamental job the Ghost has always done — no fob, no LED, no signal for a thief to find, engine dead until you enter a sequence on buttons your car already has — but it is built on a new processing platform designed for the way newer cars are wired.

The Ghost 2 is being phased out. The Ghost Pro is going the same way. In time the Ghost 3 will simply be the Ghost.

Why a new one was needed at all

Not marketing. Wiring.

Every Ghost works by sitting on your car’s internal data network — the CAN-bus, the system your vehicle’s own components use to talk to each other. That is what makes it invisible: there is no separate box to find and no radio signal to intercept.

The problem is that the network itself changed. Cars arriving from roughly 2024 onwards increasingly run CAN FD — “Flexible Data-rate” — a much faster version carrying up to 64 bytes per frame instead of 8. Earlier Ghost hardware cannot read that traffic properly. Not badly: at all. It is the wrong language.

That is why owners of newer cars kept being told an immobiliser “can’t be fitted to that yet”. The Ghost 3 is Autowatch’s answer, and it speaks both — CAN FD for the new platforms, legacy CAN for everything else.

What the Ghost 3 actually does

  • Native CAN FD, plus dual CAN networks and legacy CAN. Modern vehicles often run more than one internal network. The Ghost 3 handles both at once.
  • Digital engine blocking over CAN/LIN. Immobilisation woven into the vehicle’s own electronics rather than bolted alongside them.
  • Disarm your way. A PIN sequence on the car’s existing buttons, an authorised key-tag, or a smartphone. Your choice, not the box’s.
  • Smart immobilisation. Factory remote functions — pre-heating, cooling, apps like JLR InControl or the Ford app — keep working with the Ghost armed. You do not give up the features you paid for.
  • Service and valet mode. Hand the car to a garage without handing over your sequence.
  • TASSA approved. Every installation is registered and certificated, so your insurer has a checkable record on a database rather than a piece of paper in your glovebox. We are Member No. 0009.
  • No subscription. Ever. You buy it once.

What it stops

The same things the Ghost has always stopped, which are also the things actually happening on driveways round here.

Relay theft. Two people, one at your front door capturing the key’s signal through the wall, one at the car. The doors may open. The engine does not run.

Key cloning. A copied key that turns in the ignition and achieves nothing.

Stolen keys. Fished through a letterbox, taken in a burglary, lifted at a service. Normally that is the car gone. Here the real key is not enough on its own.

ECU tampering and CAN injection. Cutting into bodywork to reach the wiring and send start commands. The Ghost 3 still wants its authorisation, so the injection goes nowhere.

We fit the highest system your car will take

Worth knowing before you compare quotes: the Ghost 2, Ghost Pro and Ghost 3 are all £499 supplied and fitted. Same money, whichever your car needs.

So our policy is straightforward. Where your vehicle supports the Ghost 3, that is what we will fit — even if an older generation would technically do the job today.

The reason is future-proofing. If a car could take a Ghost 2, we have long fitted the Ghost Pro instead, so the dual-CAN hardware is sitting there ready whether the vehicle uses both networks yet or not. The Ghost 3 extends that further. Vehicles get newer and networks get faster, and a system chosen for the minimum that works today may not transfer to the car you buy in three years. Fitting the most capable generation your car supports costs you nothing extra and gives you the best chance of taking it with you.

We would rather do that than fit the bare minimum and have the replacement conversation later.

Sorting out the names

This causes more confusion than anything else, so plainly:

  • Ghost 3 / Ghost-III / Ghost 3 FD — the same thing. Autowatch write it Ghost-III; most people say Ghost 3; the FD refers to the CAN FD support.
  • Ghost FD — you will still see this used for the same generation of hardware.
  • Ghost 2 / Ghost-II — the previous generation, being phased out.
  • Ghost Pro — the dual-CAN model that sat between them, also being phased out.

If you have been quoted for any of these, tell us which and we will tell you what you are actually getting.

“I already have a Ghost 2 — is mine now useless?”

No, and we would say so if it were.

A Ghost 2 fitted to a car it suits carries on doing exactly what it did the day it went in. It does not stop working because a newer model exists, and there is nothing to update. Phasing out means Autowatch stop making new ones, not that yours switches off.

The time it matters is when you change cars. A Ghost 2 cannot move to a vehicle running CAN FD — that is a hardware limit, not a setting. Ask us before you assume it can come with you.

Which one does your car take?

The car decides, not you, and that is the part most comparison articles skate over.

  • Newer vehicle on CAN FD — Ghost 3. Nothing older can protect it.
  • Older single-CAN vehicle — a Ghost 2 may still be the correct fit while stock lasts.
  • Told an immobiliser cannot be fitted to your car — worth asking again. That advice dates fast, and the Ghost 3 exists precisely because of it.

Send us your registration and we will confirm which system your vehicle takes before you commit to anything. It takes a couple of minutes and costs nothing.

Common questions

Is the Ghost 3 better than the Ghost 2?

On a car that suits a Ghost 2, not meaningfully — both defeat relay attacks and cloned keys. The Ghost 3’s advantage is the vehicles it can protect at all. On a CAN FD car it is not better, it is the only one of the two that works.

Will it affect my warranty?

No. It connects to the vehicle’s existing data network without cutting the original wiring loom, and it can be removed cleanly if you sell.

How long does fitting take?

A few hours. We come to your home or workplace and the car never leaves your drive. Before we go we set your sequence with you, run through disarming until it is second nature, show you service mode, and cover what happens if you forget your code.

What does a Ghost 3 cost fitted?

£499 supplied and fitted — the same as the Ghost 2 and the Ghost Pro. There is no premium for the newer generation.

What if I forget my sequence?

There is an emergency procedure and we walk you through it on the day, so you are never stranded. Sequences can be changed later too.

Fitted at your door

We are family-run, TASSA approved, and have been doing vehicle security for over thirty years. Everything we fit is fitted where your car already is — your driveway or your workplace, across Essex, Hertfordshire and North London. You deal with the person who did the work, not a call centre.

Tell us what you drive and we will tell you which Ghost it takes. Call 03330 129 028 or get in touch.
