Toyota Insurance Services and TASSA-Verified Immobilisers: What It Means for Toyota and Lexus Owners

If you drive a Toyota or a Lexus, there is a good reason to look seriously at an aftermarket CAN-bus immobiliser — and it is not only about stopping the theft itself. Toyota Insurance Services recognises aftermarket immobilisers that hold TASSA verification, and they can be selected as a specific option when a customer enquires about insurance. In other words, the security you pay for is actually considered when your quote is prepared, instead of being ignored.

What TASSA verification actually is

TASSA — the Tracking and Aftermarket Security System Association — is the industry body that tests and verifies aftermarket vehicle security systems, and registers the companies and individual installers who fit them. Thatcham no longer accredits aftermarket immobilisers of this type, so TASSA verification has become the recognised standard that insurers look to.

Two things matter here, and the second is the one most people miss. The product has to be TASSA verified, and it has to be fitted by a TASSA registered installer. A verified immobiliser fitted by someone outside the scheme does not carry the same weight, because there is no registered certificate behind it.

The systems we fit that carry TASSA verification

Elite Car Security installs the following TASSA-verified CAN-bus immobilisers:

  • Autowatch Ghost II — the original and best-known aftermarket CAN-bus immobiliser.
  • Autowatch Ghost Pro — the dual-circuit development of the Ghost.
  • Autowatch Ghost Pro FD — the CAN FD version, for the newer vehicle architectures that the earlier units cannot address.
  • Track Manager Nitro — a TASSA-verified CAN-bus immobiliser.
  • Track Manager Nitro Pro — our specialist choice for Toyota and Lexus, with excellent coverage across the range.

These are the systems from the TASSA verified list that we install. They all work on the same principle: the immobiliser is hidden inside the vehicle’s own wiring, and the engine will not start until a unique PIN sequence is entered using buttons the car already has — the steering wheel controls, the dashboard, the window switches. There is no fob, no tag and no transponder, so there is nothing for a thief to relay, clone or find.

Why this matters for Toyota and Lexus in particular

Toyota and Lexus models are among the most persistently targeted vehicles in our area, and keyless relay theft is the method. A thief captures the signal from your key through your front door, the car unlocks and starts, and it is away in well under a minute. A CAN-bus immobiliser stops that outright — the relayed signal gets them into the car, but the engine will not turn over without the PIN.

Fitted by a TASSA registered installer

Elite Car Security is TASSA approved, Member No. 0009. We are a family-run mobile installation business based in Cheshunt, covering Essex, Hertfordshire and North London, with over 30 years of experience in vehicle security installation. We come to your home or your workplace and fit the system there.

Because we are TASSA registered, your installation is certified on the TASSA system — which is exactly what an insurer wants to see when you declare the device.

One important point about declaring it

An aftermarket immobiliser is a vehicle modification, so you must declare it to your insurer. Always confirm the position with your own insurer or broker before you buy, as recognition and any premium benefit will vary between insurers and between policies. We will give you the documentation and certification you need to support the declaration.
