Two Serious Contenders in CAN-Bus Immobilisers
Relay attacks and key-cloning have made a standard factory alarm feel like a locked door with the key left in it. A CAN-bus immobiliser closes that gap by stopping the engine from starting at all, unless a hidden PIN sequence is entered — no fob, no spare key, no way round it.
Two of the names that come up most often when people ask us for advice are the Autowatch Ghost and the CAN-Phantom. Both do a similar core job. Both hide inside your car’s own wiring. But they’re not the same product, and which one suits you can genuinely depend on what you drive.
Autowatch Ghost: The Established Name
The Ghost has been fitted into more cars, by more installers, for longer than almost anything else in this space. It disarms using your car’s own buttons — steering wheel controls, door panels, whatever combination you choose — so there’s no separate keypad for a thief to spot or a garage to fumble with. You set your own PIN sequence (up to 20 button presses), with extras like an emergency code and an optional companion app.
What really sets it apart is the track record: it’s been through several generations of refinement, it’s fitted by a huge network of trained installers across the UK, and it’s one of the most widely recognised names among insurers when it comes to Thatcham-style aftermarket security.
CAN-Phantom: The Newer Challenger
CAN-Phantom takes a similar approach — a small device hidden in the wiring loom, disguised to look like a standard automotive part, disarmed with a PIN entered through your car’s existing switches. It also offers a wifi-based interface for changing your code or setting valet mode.
It’s a genuinely capable product, and for the right car it does the job well. It’s simply newer to the market, with a smaller installer network and less of a track record behind it compared to the Ghost.
Our Verdict
Fitted more often, backed by more years in the field, and recognised more widely by insurers — on balance, the Autowatch Ghost comes out on top for most vehicles we see. If you asked us to pick one immobiliser to recommend blind, that’s the one.
But Here’s the Honest Answer
“Blind” is the important word there. No single immobiliser is the right fit for every car. Wiring layouts, CAN-bus architecture and switch placement vary by make and model, and sometimes a different system integrates more cleanly with a particular vehicle than the market leader does. The right answer genuinely changes case by case.
