Why Leisure Vehicles Need Different Thinking

A car sits outside your house and you look at it every day. A motorhome or caravan spends most of the year somewhere else — a storage compound, a farm field, the side of the house under a cover — and nobody checks on it from one month to the next. That’s the whole problem. A vehicle can be gone for weeks before anyone notices, by which point it’s been re-plated, split for parts, or is already abroad.

A monitored tracker changes the timeline. Movement outside the hours you expect triggers an alert, and a monitored recovery response goes to work while the vehicle is still close by — not three weeks later when you next visit the storage site.

Motorhomes and Caravans Are Not the Same Job

    Motorhomes & Campervans

These are vehicles with an engine, an ignition and a permanent 12V supply, so they take the same Thatcham-approved S5 and S7 systems we fit to cars — including driver-recognition tags on S5, which flag a theft the moment the vehicle moves without your tag aboard.

The install itself is a bigger job than a car. There’s more vehicle to route through, habitation wiring to work around, and a lot more places to hide a unit properly — which is an advantage, if whoever fits it knows the vehicle.

    Touring Caravans

A caravan has no engine and no ignition, and once it’s unhitched it has no reliable power feed either. A standard vehicle tracker has nothing to run from. Caravans need a self-powered unit — its own battery, its own reporting schedule, designed to sit dormant for months and still report when something moves.

That’s a different piece of hardware and a different conversation about where it hides. Tell us the make, model and year and we’ll tell you what actually suits it.

If Your Insurer Has Asked For a Tracker

Insurers frequently make a Thatcham-approved tracker a condition of cover on higher-value motorhomes, and they’ll usually name the category they want. S7 is location tracking. S5 adds driver recognition — a tag that has to be present or the system reports the movement as unauthorised.

Send us the wording from your policy or renewal letter and we’ll fit to it exactly, then issue the certification you need to send back. Our guide to S5 or S7 explained covers the difference in plain English, and you can see the full range on our tracking systems page.

We Fit At the Storage Site

You shouldn’t have to collect a motorhome, drive it somewhere, wait around and take it back. We’re fully mobile — we’ll come to your storage compound, your driveway, a farm yard or wherever the vehicle actually lives, and fit it where it stands.

Based in Cheshunt, covering Essex, Hertfordshire and North & East London — Waltham Cross, Hoddesdon, Hertford, Ware, Watford, St Albans, Harlow, Chelmsford, Basildon, Brentwood, Romford, Epping and out towards the Essex coast. Motorhome & Caravan Tracker FAQs

Can you fit a tracker to a touring caravan?

Yes, but not the same unit we’d fit to a car. Caravans have no permanent power once unhitched, so they need a self-powered tracker with its own battery, designed to sit dormant and still report movement. Tell us the make and model and we’ll confirm what suits it.

What does a motorhome tracker cost to fit?

It depends on the vehicle and the system your insurer wants, so we quote per vehicle rather than publish one figure — a coachbuilt motorhome is a bigger job than a small campervan. There’s a monitoring subscription alongside the hardware; we’ll set out both before you commit to anything.

Will fitting a tracker affect my warranty or habitation check?

No. We fit cleanly, work around the habitation wiring rather than through it, and leave the installation documented. Over thirty years of doing this, we’ve never had a warranty issue caused by an install.

Can you fit it where the vehicle is stored?

Yes — storage compound, farm yard, driveway, wherever it sits. Just check the site is happy for us to come in, and let us know if there’s an access code or someone we need to speak to.

Does the tracker drain the vehicle battery over winter?

It’s the right question to ask, because a motorhome standing for months is exactly where a badly chosen tracker causes trouble. The systems we fit are designed for low standby draw and report on a schedule rather than constantly. We’ll talk you through what to expect for your vehicle and how it’s stored.
