Can You Secure a New Mercedes CLA Petrol Hybrid? Yes — And We Were the First to Do It

    The Short Answer: Yes

If you’ve just taken delivery of the new Mercedes CLA petrol hybrid and you’ve been told it can’t have a CAN-bus immobiliser fitted — we have good news. It can. In June this year, Elite Car Security became the first company to secure one of these vehicles with a CAN-bus immobiliser, using the Nitro Pro CAN-IMMO. As far as we’re aware, nobody else had managed it before us — and plenty are still struggling now.

Why the New CLA Is Causing Installers Problems

Every new generation of vehicle brings new electronics, and the latest CLA is no exception. Its CAN-bus architecture doesn’t behave like the cars installers are used to, which is why so many installation companies — and even the immobiliser manufacturers themselves — have been telling CLA owners that there’s no solution yet for the new petrol hybrid.

Here’s the honest truth about how we got there first: it wasn’t the product that cracked it. Off the shelf, no immobiliser was ready for this car. It came down to our skills and expertise — more than 30 years of working inside vehicle electrical systems — and a willingness to work directly with the manufacturers to develop a solution that actually works on this vehicle. Together we got it secured, properly.

    How the Finished Install Works

The car itself is awesome, and the install went great. The immobilisation works exactly as it should: the engine will not start until the correct PIN sequence is entered on the car’s own buttons, and the CLA has more than enough buttons to set a long, genuinely secure PIN code. No fob, no tag, nothing for a thief to clone or relay — the same covert protection we fit on Toyota and Lexus vehicles with the Nitro Pro every week.

Being honest, as we always are: on the current version, the disarm notification is done with a buzzer, and we think that deserves improving. We’d like to see digital indication on this vehicle, and we’re continuing to work with the manufacturers on a new file to make that happen. In the meantime, there’s a working fix in place — the protection itself is rock solid, and the buzzer does its job.

  • Autowatch Ghost vs Nitro Pro: Which Immobiliser Is Right for Your Car?

Autowatch Ghost vs Nitro Pro: Which Immobiliser Is Right for Your Car?

    Two TASSA-Approved CAN-Bus Immobilisers

Modern car theft rarely involves breaking a window any more. Relay attacks and key-cloning let thieves fool your car into thinking the real key is present, and a standard factory alarm does nothing to stop it. A CAN-bus immobiliser closes that gap by refusing to let the engine start at all until a hidden PIN sequence is entered — no fob, no spare key, no shortcut.

Two systems we fit and rate highly are the Autowatch Ghost and the Nitro Pro CAN-IMMO. Both are TASSA-approved, both hide silently inside your car’s own wiring, and both are disarmed through buttons you already have. The difference is in where each one really shines.

    Autowatch Ghost: The Established All-Rounder

The Ghost has been fitted into more cars, by more installers, over more years than almost anything else in this category. You disarm it with your car’s own controls — steering wheel, door or console buttons, in a sequence you set yourself (up to 20 presses) — so there’s no separate keypad for a thief to spot. Add an emergency code and an optional companion app, and it’s a proven, flexible choice across a huge range of makes and models.

Its biggest strength is track record: several generations of refinement, a UK-wide network of trained installers, and strong name recognition with insurers.

Nitro Pro CAN-IMMO: The Toyota & Lexus Specialist

The Nitro Pro is also a TASSA-approved CAN-bus immobiliser working on the same core principle — covert, wired into the vehicle’s network, and disarmed by a PIN entered through your existing switches. Where it stands out is its reputation on Toyota and Lexus vehicles, where it tends to integrate especially cleanly with the way those cars are built.

For an owner of one of those makes, that tighter fit can make the Nitro Pro the more natural choice — a good example of why the “best” immobiliser isn’t always the most famous one.

    Our Verdict

For most vehicles, the Autowatch Ghost’s track record and broad compatibility make it the safe default recommendation. But if you drive a Toyota or Lexus, the Nitro Pro is very much in the conversation, and on some of those models it’s the one we’d lean towards.

    But Here’s the Honest Answer

No single immobiliser is right for every car. Wiring layouts and CAN-bus architecture vary by make and model, and the system that integrates most cleanly on one vehicle isn’t always the one that suits the next. The right answer genuinely changes case by case.

That’s why it pays to get advice from an installer who fits more than one system rather than a company selling a single product — because if there’s only one thing on the shelf, every car gets recommended that same thing, whether it’s the best match or not.

As a TASSA-approved installer fitting Autowatch Ghost, Nitro Pro, Pandora and other systems across Essex, Hertfordshire and London, we recommend whichever immobiliser genuinely suits your car best — not whichever one we happen to sell. Get in touch and we’ll tell you straight which one we’d fit on your specific vehicle.

  • Autowatch Ghost vs Pandora Microbot: Which Immobiliser Suits Your Car?

Autowatch Ghost vs Pandora Microbot: Which Immobiliser Suits Your Car?

    Two Excellent Immobilisers, Different Strengths

We get asked a lot which immobiliser is “the best”. Truthfully, the honest answer is it depends what you drive — and the Autowatch Ghost and Pandora Microbot are a good example of why. Both are excellent, each leads with a different style of authorisation, and each carries an accreditation that matters for a different reason.

    Autowatch Ghost

The Ghost disarms using your car’s own buttons — steering wheel controls, door panels, whatever combination you set — with a changeable PIN sequence of up to 20 presses. There’s no separate keypad, no extra fob, nothing for a thief to find.

Its standout advantage: it’s fitted by TASSA-approved installers like us, and TASSA approval itself carries real weight with insurers — it’s an industry-recognised standard that confirms the installation meets a proper, vetted level of quality.

    Pandora Microbot

The Pandora Microbot takes a different approach. It connects directly via CAN-bus and works with your OEM key alongside a discreet encrypted Bluetooth tag — and it also supports a PIN code, giving it the same tag-or-code flexibility as the Ghost and Nitro Pro. Worth knowing: its Thatcham Cat 2E approval depends on an additional relay module being fitted alongside it — a separate physical immobilisation circuit — rather than on which authorisation method you choose. It’s engineered to fit petrol, diesel, hybrid and electric vehicles alike, giving dual-layer immobilisation with no hidden switches to remember.

Its standout advantage: Thatcham Category 2/2E approval when the relay module is fitted, another accreditation insurers specifically recognise, which can support your case for a reduced premium in exactly the same way TASSA approval does for the Ghost.

    So Which One Wins?

Neither, outright — and that’s the honest point. One carries the weight of TASSA approval, the other carries Thatcham Category 2/2E accreditation, and which matters more for you depends on your insurer, your vehicle, and how each system integrates with your car’s specific wiring and CAN-bus setup. A system that’s a perfect fit on one model can be a poor fit on another, regardless of which one is “better” on paper.

That’s exactly why it’s worth checking with a professional who fits more than one type of immobiliser, rather than a company that only sells a single product and has every reason to recommend it regardless of your car. As a TASSA-approved installer fitting both the Autowatch Ghost and Pandora Microbot — along with the Nitro Pro and other systems — across Essex, Hertfordshire and London, we’ll give you a straight, unbiased recommendation based on what actually suits your vehicle. Get in touch and we’ll talk you through the right option for your car — or see all four systems side by side on our immobiliser comparison table.

  • Autowatch Ghost vs CAN-Phantom: Which Immobiliser Is Right for Your Car?

Autowatch Ghost vs CAN-Phantom: Which Immobiliser Is Right for Your Car?

Two Serious Contenders in CAN-Bus Immobilisers

Relay attacks and key-cloning have made a standard factory alarm feel like a locked door with the key left in it. A CAN-bus immobiliser closes that gap by stopping the engine from starting at all, unless a hidden PIN sequence is entered — no fob, no spare key, no way round it.

Two of the names that come up most often when people ask us for advice are the Autowatch Ghost and the CAN-Phantom. Both do a similar core job. Both hide inside your car’s own wiring. But they’re not the same product, and which one suits you can genuinely depend on what you drive.

    Autowatch Ghost: The Established Name

The Ghost has been fitted into more cars, by more installers, for longer than almost anything else in this space. It disarms using your car’s own buttons — steering wheel controls, door panels, whatever combination you choose — so there’s no separate keypad for a thief to spot or a garage to fumble with. You set your own PIN sequence (up to 20 button presses), with extras like an emergency code and an optional companion app.

What really sets it apart is the track record: it’s been through several generations of refinement, it’s fitted by a huge network of trained installers across the UK, and it’s one of the most widely recognised names among insurers when it comes to Thatcham-style aftermarket security.

    CAN-Phantom: The Newer Challenger

CAN-Phantom takes a similar approach — a small device hidden in the wiring loom, disguised to look like a standard automotive part, disarmed with a PIN entered through your car’s existing switches. It also offers a wifi-based interface for changing your code or setting valet mode.

It’s a genuinely capable product, and for the right car it does the job well. It’s simply newer to the market, with a smaller installer network and less of a track record behind it compared to the Ghost.

    Our Verdict

Fitted more often, backed by more years in the field, and recognised more widely by insurers — on balance, the Autowatch Ghost comes out on top for most vehicles we see. If you asked us to pick one immobiliser to recommend blind, that’s the one.

    But Here’s the Honest Answer

“Blind” is the important word there. No single immobiliser is the right fit for every car. Wiring layouts, CAN-bus architecture and switch placement vary by make and model, and sometimes a different system integrates more cleanly with a particular vehicle than the market leader does. The right answer genuinely changes case by case.

This is exactly why it’s worth getting advice from an installer who fits more than one system, rather than a company that only sells a single product. If a business only offers one immobiliser, every car that walks through the door gets recommended that same product — regardless of whether it’s actually the best match for that vehicle. That’s not a knock on any particular device; it’s just how incentives work when there’s only one thing on the shelf.

As a TASSA-approved installer fitting Autowatch Ghost, Nitro Pro, Pandora and other systems across Essex, Hertfordshire and London, we recommend whichever immobiliser genuinely suits your car best — not whichever one we happen to sell exclusively. Get in touch and we’ll tell you straight which option we’d fit on your specific vehicle — or see all four systems side by side on our immobiliser comparison table.
